Hearing Aid Overview

Hearing aids help millions of people navigate daily life and communication. These savvy pieces of technology provide the ears and brain with ample support, making it easier to hear and process speech as well as sound. Like most of today’s electronic devices, hearing aids have experienced significant innovation over recent years. There is an array of options such as blue-tooth connectivity and rechargeability with additional features and technologies that optimize sound quality and connectivity.

Our team takes the time to get to know your hearing and lifestyle needs which allows us to recommend specific devices from the top 6 manufacturers that can best meet those needs. All fittings are done using best practices such as real-ear measurements to ensure an accurate fitting and our brain adaptation program will help you gradually get use to hearing again by slowly increasing the volume over a specified time period.

Real-ear measurements (REMs) play a pivotal role in the precise fitting and optimization of hearing aids, offering an objective assessment of the device's performance within the unique contours of the ear canal. Given the distinct differences in ear canal shapes, sizes, and acoustic characteristics, even identical hearing aids with identical programming may yield varied sound levels for each individual ear.

During the REM process, a delicate probe microphone is carefully positioned 5mm from the ear drum. A calibrated speech recording is then played through a speaker. This meticulous procedure allows the audiologist to fine-tune the hearing aid, customizing the amount of gain at each specific frequency. By doing so, the audiologist ensures that the amplification is precisely tailored to your individual needs, preventing both under-amplification and over-amplification scenarios. Your hearing aids will then be turned down and set to increase automatically over a specified time period.
