Sound Sensitivity, Misophonia & Hyperacusis
Misophonia
Misophonia is characterized by unusually strong emotional and physical reactions to specific sounds. Common triggers may include chewing, breathing, tapping, clicking, sniffing, or other repetitive sounds. The reaction is not simply a dislike of the sound—it can cause significant distress and interfere with school, work, relationships, and everyday activities.
Our approach focuses on understanding individual triggers, reducing the impact those sounds have on daily life, and developing practical strategies for managing sound sensitivity.
Hyperacusis
Hyperacusis is a decreased tolerance for everyday sounds. Sounds that are comfortable for most people may seem excessively loud, uncomfortable, or even painful. Hyperacusis can occur following noise exposure, head injury, migraine, tinnitus, or other medical or neurological conditions.
Evaluation helps us determine how sound tolerance is affecting daily life and guides an individualized treatment plan. Treatment may include counseling, gradual sound enrichment, appropriate use of hearing technology when indicated, and strategies designed to improve tolerance to everyday sounds.
The Listening Program®
First Coast Audiology is pleased to offer The Listening Program® (TLP) as an additional therapeutic option for appropriate patients.
The Listening Program is a music-based auditory stimulation program designed to support auditory processing and sensory regulation through structured listening activities. Programs are selected and monitored based on the individual's needs and may be completed in the office and/or at home.
TLP may be incorporated into a broader treatment plan for patients experiencing auditory processing difficulties, sound sensitivity, difficulty filtering competing sounds, or other listening challenges when clinically appropriate.
